5-7 Year Old Basketball Rules
1. High school rules shall apply. On foul shots, the lane cannot be entered until the ball hits the rim.
2. Each team will be awarded 4 timeouts per game.
3. 5-6 year olds will play two 15 minute quarters - with a 5 minute half no Overtime
4. The clock will continue to run except for timeouts and shooting fouls; in the last minute of the game the clock will stop on every whistle.
5. 5-6 year olds will shoot on the 8 foot goals, and shoot fouls from an abbreviated line.
6. Three-pointers (3 pointers) must be shot beyond the arc.
7. Teams will play with a junior size ball (27.5”) provided by Z-PAL
8. In the 5-6 year olds there will be no back court press. Once the opposing team has gained control no attempt can be made to gain control until the ball crosses three point circle on the offensive end. If a violation does occur the ref will award the ball back to the rightful team.
9. There will be no personal fouls, but there will be team fouls.
10. All players must play. The first violation will result in forfeiture and a one game suspension of the coach. The second violation will result in expulsion of the coach for the remainder of the season. Injuries and disqualification due to fouls are the only exception to this rule.
11. Each coach should attempt to allow each player to “handle the ball” once per game. Player involvement is important to the development of the player and their inclusion with the team.
12. All teams must play Man-to-Man defense or all zones. Limited double-teaming is allowed (as defined as inside the paint).
13. Double Dribbling and traveling will be monitored by the official but will not be strict.
14. Each team must provide an adult to keep either the book or the clock for each game. Book keepers should be aware that: team fouls are recorded per half, one in-one occurs on team foul #7 and two shot fouls occur on team foul #10.
15. If a player/coach/spectator is ejected, the Director will determine all disciplinary action.
16. If a player shows up late, the coach should make every attempt to play them. If the player shows up after the start of the second quarter, the coach is not held rule #10.
17. ALL PLAYERS MUST WEAR TEAM SHIRT, IF THEY DO NOT WEAR WHAT HAS BEEN GIVEN, THEY CANNOT PLAY.
18. This is an instructional league. Please keep that in mind that the coaches and refs are volunteers and not paid.
